Adventure Challenge - Wednesday, May 09, 2007
The IrishAR girls and boys have their final challenge at the Irish Adventure Challenge this weekend in Kerry. Vanessa and Roisin and Chris and Bob team up for the last race before the Worlds in 3 weeks time. Both teams are using the 8 hour race as a final sharpener for the Worlds and are looking forward to being immersed in the magical Kerry landscape.

Eoin Keith

Eoin Keith is a proven adventure racing champion.  He has led winning teams on several Irish adventure races, including multiple Irish AR Championship races and 2 National Adventure Marathons.  He also has international experience , successfully competing in several Adrenalin Rush races & was part of the Irish team that came a very impressive 4th in the Wilderness ARC 2005.  Eoin is an experienced orienteer – a previous Leinster League champion and 4-time winner of the Wicklow 24-hour rogaine.  As a hill runner with the Irish Mountain Running Association, he has numerous event & championship wins & records.  He is also the current Irish 100km ultra-running champion.


Vanessa Lawrenson

Vanessa Lawrenson comes from a rowing background, winning a total of 18 Irish national rowing championships (an Irish women’s record).  She also had international rowing success with silver & bronze medals from World U23 Championships (1996 -1997), gold & silver medals from Amsterdam International Regatta (2005) and 3 gold medals from Ghent Regatta (2005).  Recently Vanessa changed focus to hill running and adventure racing with an immediate impact.  Within the last year she was a winning team member on multiple Irish AR Championship races & was also on the 4th place team in Wilderness ARC 2005. She finished 25th out of 90 teams in Primal Quest in 2006

Paul Mahon

Paul Mahon is one of Irelands’ most experienced adventure racers with several top place finishes, including the National Adventure Marathon (twice 1st, once 2nd, twice 3rd), Carlingford Lough Endurance Challenge (5 wins), Irish AR Series (5 wins), Outsider Inter-Forces Challenge (2 wins) and Wilderness ARC 2005 (5th). Pól has competed internationally in Argentina, Australia, Thailand, Brazil, Uruguay, Malaysia and throughout UK and Europe.  He is also a top orienteer, mountain biker and hill runner.

Paul McArthur

IPaul McArthur is an experienced climber, with many first and second ascents in Ireland & has also climbed all over Britain, Europe (including the Alps) and Western USA.  Paul is a regular top 10 in the Irish Bouldering League. Paul is also a top adventure racer, with several top place finishes in the Irish Adventure Races Series and international-level experience from at UK ACE Races, Adrenalin Rush 2002 and Wilderness ARC 2005 (4th). Other achievements include the High Peak Marathon (13:07hrs) and Wickow 24-hour Rogaine (1st).

Roisin McDonnell

Roisin MacDonnell comes from a hill running and orienteering background.  She was Irish Mountain Running Champion 2002 & 2004 and represented Ireland in the Mountain Running World Championships in 2002 & 2003.  Her long-distance orienteering achievements include wins in the Mourne Mountain Marathon in 1997 and 1998 and the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon 1998,1999 & 2000.  Roisin is also an experience adventure racer with 2 wins in the Outsider Inter-Forces Challenge & several other top finishes, including Wilderness ARC 2005 (5th).

Barry Minnock

Barry Minnock comes originally from a Gaelic football background, but over the last number of years has progressively strengthened his mountain running & adventure racing credentials.  In 2005 he was part of the Irish team that came 2nd in the international Matterhorn race in the Swiss Alps.  He has several top place finishes in races with the Irish Mountain Running Association, including 1st place in the Wicklow Trail 25k, 2006.  He has competed is several Irish adventure races, including 1 win & several top-3 finishes. He finished 25th out of 90 teams in Primal Quest in 2006

Evan Ryan

Evan is a dedicated cyclist and can often be found on the mountain biking & cyclo-cross circuit, where he consistently one of top performers in Ireland.  Evan is relatively new to the adventure racing scene, but already has a couple of wins under his belt in the Irish AR championships and a 5th place finish in the Wilderness ARC. He finished 25th out of 90 teams in Primal Quest in 2006

Gearoid Towey

Gearoid Towey is well on the way to becoming Irelands’ all-time top rower, already with World gold in 1996 (U23) & 2001 and bronze in 1999 & 2003. He is a two-time Irish Olympian at the Sydney & Athens games. Gearoid credentials extend far beyond rowing, having completed several adventure races including the Red Bull Giants of Rio, Wilderness ARC 2005 (5th) and several Irish-based races.  He is also a regular top place finisher in Irish mountain races, including a win in last years Wicklow-Way relay. In 2005 he attempted to row across the Altantic. A freak storm smashed his boat and he hung on to a flimsy inflatable liferaft until a Spanish tanker happened to be passing and picked him up.
